This evergreen musical is as fresh today as it was eighty years ago and is universally acknowledged as the first work to use lyrics and dance to advance the story. Many hail it as the Hamilton of its time. It set the pattern for subsequent musicals and certainly it has endured to this day as a much-loved show.
Set in Oklahoma in the early years of its statehood, it’s a love story between a cocky cowboy and a smart wilful farm girl. It doesn’t altogether go smoothly! It was the first collaboration by the legendary team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, who went on to write The Sound of Music, Carousel, South Pacific and The King and I.
From ‘Oh What a Beautiful Morning’, ‘Surrey with the Fringe on Top, ‘I Cain’t Say No’, ‘People Will Say We’re in Love’, ‘Out of My Dreams’, through to the rousing ‘Oklahoma’, it is a joy.
Never mind ‘West End revival', we are doing the ‘Lichfield Revival’!
