As the cultural conflict intensifies between young Americans (the ‘Jets’) and Puerto Ricans (the ‘Sharks’) the passion turns to tragedy when Tony, the leader of the Jets, and Maria, a Puerto Rican, fall deeply, desperately defiantly in love.
