Lichfield Garrick to host BLAST prom for autistic young people

Lichfield Garrick Theatre hosts BLAST prom for autistic young people based in and around Staffordshire

Lichfield Garrick Theatre is proud to be providing a space for Burntwood and Lichfield Autism Support Together (BLAST) to hold their first ever inclusive prom for autistic young people based in Staffordshire and its surrounding areas. The event welcomes young people who are finishing Key Stage 4 this year and cannot access a school prom, as well as those who finished Key Stage 4 in the last 2 years and were unable to attend a prom. The prom will promote confidence, wellbeing and social skills.

The idea for the event came from BLAST member, Matty, who had no school prom to go to. Meanwhile she was watching friends preparing for their own proms, showing off their dresses and getting ready for this milestone of any young person's early life and realised there was nothing for people like her. She came up with the incredible idea to host an accessible prom that removes barriers, providing a supportive, inclusive environment where young people don't have to miss out. Matty says 'this event is organised by autistic people, for young autistic people' and notes that many accessible events are not necessarily planned by people with lived experience or understanding of the access requirements. Due to this, these events aren't always as accessible as they aim to be.

The prom will provide independence for these young people, whilst still ensuring everyone is well looked after, safe and comfortable. Dedicated volunteers will be on hand, quiet spaces will be available and, where possible, parents or carers can be onsite, whilst still giving the attendees a chance to independently navigate this exciting experience.  The Lichfield Garrick team will also be on hand to ensure the soft drinks are flowing and everyone has the best time.

The prom is a fantastic evening out for the young people, and BLAST are also keen to make this prom sustainable. By removing this barrier, the young people who attend are encouraged to wear whatever makes them happy and travel however they feel most comfortable, with no pressure for expensive dresses or limos. This way, no one will miss out! And for anyone who struggles to find their perfect outfit, BLAST have partnered with PromAlly who may be able to provide dresses & suits for the night.

The prom will have a 'Hollywood Glamour' theme and the ticket price goes toward making the event extra special for everyone who attends. To book a ticket you can visit BLAST here. If you have any questions, or simply want to help, BLAST welcome you to get in touch with them by emailing office@blastsupport.co.uk
